The week of August 15th is the worst week to take time off from work 

because everyone in southern Italy does. 

Need a doctor, mechanic, fruit and vegetables, cat litter, a plumber, bookkeeper ...? Good luck, try again in 2 weeks.

Only supermarkets and shopping malls are open.

That's why it's the worst week to take time off: everyone is at the beach or at other holiday destinations.

 

I don't have much choice though, because the Lion King's daughter never works that week and so we take her and the grandchildren to the beach.

 

Which is delightful and magical at 9 am

But supercrowded 2 hours later.

But it's so freaking hot, that there is no other thinkable option. 

 Also ... The beach in southern Italy is a bit like a supermarket itself... Vendors walk around trying to sell everything from clothes and beach stuff over gelato and clams to speakers for your phone and massages...
